Porsche Design Turns 50 Years Old With Special Edition Swiss Watches

Porsche Design is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a special edition watch that matches Porsche’s special anniversary sports cars.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1, a very special Swiss watch, took inspiration from classic Porsche dashboard instruments.

At the same time, parent company Porsche AG has unveiled a one-of-a-kind restored 1972 911 S 2.4 Targa Classic and a new 911 Edition 50 Years model – limited to 750 vehicles.

Both Porsche Design and Porsche kicked off the celebration with a special exhibition, “50 Years of Porsche Design,” at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

The Chronograph 1 takes its inspiration from the car’s dashboard instruments, breaking traditional watch design codes while adhering to F.A. Porsche’s form-equals-function design ethos, according to Porsche.

For 50 years, Porsche Design has translated Porsche’s innovative spirit into other lifestyle products. Not surprisingly, the 50th anniversary watches are steeped in Porsche history.

Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, grandson of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche (and designer of the legendary 911 sports car) founded the studio in 1972.

His first commission was a watch to be gifted to specially recognized employees of the family firm Porsche AG.

The new watches are part of a limited-edition 50-Year Capsule Collection that also includes sunglasses, apparel, sneakers, accessories, and luggage, with launches scheduled throughout the year.

The exclusive lifestyle brand will produce exactly 500 pieces of the Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition, paying homage to the original – the first all-black timepiece appointed with white numbers and hands for heightened legibility.

The new version retails for $9,650. Its dial, crown, clasp, and case back all bear the historic logo, while the tachymeter scale around the dial – as well as the day and date display – use the original typography from 1972.

The rectangular-shaped baton hands also trace back to its predecessor.

“Visually it is closely based on 1972, but technically it is state of the art in 2022,” said Jan Becker, CEO of Porsche Lifestyle Group, during the presentation. “For such a timepiece, we didn’t have to change much, only where it made functional sense.”

Originally stainless steel, the new watch is full titanium. It has also been upgraded to the COSC-certified Porsche Design automatic caliber WERK 01.140 with time, chronograph, day, and date displays.

For the last eight years, the product design studio has produced all of its watches in-house at its facility in Solothurn, Switzerland.

The AG parent company came up with another special tribute: a one-of-a-kind 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa, which has been fully restored by Porsche Classic over the course of almost two years.

“The sports car is a perennial design inspiration at Porsche Design,” Becker said. “This one-of-a-kind car features historic fabrics as well as typical Porsche Design elements. On the engine cover at the rear sits a 50 Years of Porsche Design plaque, bearing the recreated signature of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.”

Both the watch and the restored Targa 911 will be sold in an online auction by Sotheby’s New York at the end of the year.

But Porsche went even further in marking the occasion with the launch of the 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design (US$197,000), limited to 750 vehicles exhibiting F. A. Porsche’s signature design style.

The high-end brand creates sport and fashion collections in head-to-toe styles to complement Porsche cars. Designers incorporate the same premium materials that go into production vehicles.

From kitchen appliances to luxury watches, the luxury brand does it all and we try to showcase some of the best products in our store.

With a community of passionate owners and enthusiasts, Porsche’s successful recipe for creating performance vehicles and luxury lifestyle collections begins at its design center.

“Our designs break new creative ground, rethink an existing principle, (and are) exceptionally functional, and of course technologically feasible without difficulty,” said Design Director at Studio F.A. Porsche Christian Schwamkrug.

As the designer of the Porsche 911, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s vision was to create an additional lifestyle company that would take the principles and the “spirit of Porsche” beyond the automobile itself.
