It's official, Porsche joins UN Global Compact. The United Nations recently confirmed that Porsche joins UN Global Compact, the world’s biggest and most important initiative for sustainable and responsible corporate governance. UN Global Compact is a multi-stakeholder platform for the development, implementation, and disclosure of responsible business practices, according to Porsche. “We are implementing our sustainability strategy throughout our company and together with our partners. Porsche has the ambition to make its value chain net carbon-neutral in 2030 including a net carbon-neutral use phase for future BEV models,” said Barbara Frenkel, Member of the Executive Board for Procurement at Porsche AG. “The participation in UN Global Compact clearly underlines our aspiration to reconcile business activity with ecological considerations and fair working conditions.” Barbara Frenkel, Member of The Executive Board for Procurement at Porsche AG. Among other things, the UN Global Compact is a call to companies/industry as a whole to align operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. As Porsche joins UN Global Compact, part of the initiative is that Porsche will regularly report to the UN Global Compact and the public regarding its activities in these fields. The UN Global Compact was launched in 2000 and is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world. It includes more than 15,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories spread over 160 countries. All 193 Member States of the United Nations in 2015 adopted a plan for “achieving a better future for all” while creating a path over the next 15 years to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect our planet. This Porsche, of course, has a rather negative claim to fame due to the fact that it is the same model James Dean was driving when he died. But the Porsche 550 Spyder is one amazing sports car. Jerry’s is one of a mere 75 that were ever made. The 550 Spyder has a 1.5-liter engine and is capable of 140mph. It was Porsche’s first purpose-built race car, and it carried the nickname the “giant killer” for its on-track adventures. Jerry sold his at auction for $5.3 million in 2016. It is considered one of the finest examples still in existence because it was only raced a handful of times and survived in good condition. “ 1964 Porsche 911 More Legends To Jerry Seinfeld's Porsche Collection. The 1964 Porsche 911. This is the very first production 911, and Jerry possesses the model that was built for Ferry Porsche (the son of Porsche’s founder) himself. Ferry specified a sunroof, leather seats, and among other things metallic exterior paint. It was the first 911 ever imported to the US. Jerry purchased the car in 1996 for $400,000. And he also sent it to the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen for a full painstaking restoration using original parts and finishes. To the tune of $250,000. It’s something to behold. 1970 Targa Florio-winning Porsche 908/03 (chassis number 008) 1970 Targa Florio-winning Porsche 908/03. This model was designed by Porsche to specifically compete in two World Sportscar Championship endurance races on two tracks: The Targa Florio and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. As a prototype, it was dubbed the “VW bus” because of the driver’s upright sitting position and the pedals being so close to the front of the car. In other words, not super comfy. After years of development and technological boundary-pushing, this much-hyped supercar was finally released in 1986 with a powerful flat-six turbocharged engine and a not-quite-street-legal top speed of 197 mph. In fact, the car was forbidden to be driven on public roads. Just 337 were ever made. Jerry $700,000 for this car, which is, of course, quite lovely to look at. 2000 Porsche Carrera GT Prototype 2000 Porsche Carrera GT Prototype. Porsche produced just 1,270 of these mid-engined hypercars between 2004 and 2007. Jerry’s is just two of the fully functioning prototypes built in 2000. He had a 2004 GT but sold it in 2011. 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder. In true Porsche-loving fashion, when Porsche magazine asked Jerry what three things he would take with him to a desert island, he answered: A 356 Speedster, a 964 Carrera RS, and a 918 Spyder. The 918 Spyder is a mid-engined hybrid hypercar. It has a 4.6-liter V8 engine, paired with two electric motors and it can get you from zero to 62 in just 2.6 seconds while reaching a top speed of 214 mph. We all know that Porsche makes some of the finest cars on the planet. And when it comes right down to it, that greatness is found in the details, especially within the Porsche Surface Coated Brakes. And the Cayenne represents the greatness of Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCBs) like no other SUV on the planet. The Cayenne luxury SUV drives similarly to a sports car, with precision handling and agility. You can drive on windy roads while enjoying the underlying firmness of an SUV. Porsche Is Changing The Automotive World With Revolutionary Brake Technology. It delivers pristine performance and plenty of style, making it a popular choice for a luxury midsize SUV. But some of the features that make it great are not readily seen by the consumer. For instance, the Cayenne, like other Porsche models, has class-defining brakes. Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCBs) These Porsche Brakes don’t rust and produce very little brake dust. And, best of all, the brakes will debut as a standard feature of the new Cayenne Turbo. The PSCBs is nothing less than a worldwide first. Its surface consists of tungsten carbide. Tungsten and carbon form a mixed crystal so hard that they can be used to cut glass. Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials in the world after diamond, and around ten times harder than gray cast iron—which is precisely what makes it so interesting to brake engineers. It's a brake that functions similarly to a ceramic brake and has the same thermal stability but costs only about one-third as much. It doesn’t need racing pads and shows much less wear than a conventional gray-iron brake. Best of all, as we mentioned, it produces little brake dust and won’t rust. That sounds like alchemy – but it’s simply cutting-edge technology from Porsche. New technology developed for racing is often transferred to road vehicles. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCBs) are a perfect example of this phenomenon. It’s a master at deceleration and the absolute benchmark in its field. Modern gray-iron brakes are nothing to sniff at, of course. But there was a need for a hybrid of these two types, which are both especially powerful Porsches that don’t necessarily hit the racetrack every day. The solution was obvious to the Porsche team developing the technology - a carbide coating. Their central question: Why shouldn’t tool steel with a century-long track record work just as well for a brake disc? Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes. Simply put, a brake disc made entirely of tungsten carbide would cost as much as several sets of ceramic brakes. Moreover, the technology wasn’t sufficiently advanced to bind tungsten carbide to a substrate such as gray iron. But after a lengthy series of tests in close collaboration with Bosch/Buderus, Porsche made the breakthrough. A gray-iron disc was laser-processed to offer structure, then galvanized with an interlayer. The interlayer acts like a flexible bond to relieve the differential thermal extension of gray iron and tungsten carbide, which is then applied in a spectacular manner: a high-velocity oxy-fuel spraying process shoots tungsten carbide particles at the disc at supersonic speeds. For a moment, it looks like a Star Wars lightsaber is firing around the disc. The result is a coating around one hundred micrometers thick - but it still doesn’t do the trick on its own. Now what it needs are very special brake pads. A surface as smooth as a mirror needs a special pad that’s adhesive. Imagine running your finger with light pressure over a mirror; it doesn’t slide uniformly but instead keeps sticking for an instant. However, an overly soft pad on a very hard surface would wear down too quickly at high disc speeds. So the engineers added some very hard materials to the pad: microscopic particles that penetrate the tungsten carbide coating. These pads positively cling to the disc. Check out: Think pink. As in Pink Porsche Taycan. Clean as a whistle. After around six thousand kilometers of normal use, the brake pads have polished the surface of the disc to a shine. Their color then matches the white ten-piston fixed calipers in the front and the four-piston fixed calipers in the rear, whose technology is familiar from the PCCBs. But why white? Leber laughs. “If a brake produces practically no dust, you want to advertise that fact. My color proposal met with a lot of initial resistance.” But after thousands of kilometers, the brakes on the new Porsche Cayenne test vehicles are still clean as a whistle. The Porsche Surface Coated Brakeswill start as standard equipment only in the new Cayenne Turbo. It’s available as an option for all other new Cayenne models. Each digit along the bottom shows a near-panic brake stop, repeated in succession.  Notice as heat progressively builds up in a cast iron brake rotor, the amount of pedal pressure needed to stop the vehicle increases significantly.  This is a classic case of brake fade. PSCBs, however, almost laugh off the heat.  With tungsten carbide being so resilient in dissipating heat, there is virtually no brake fade, even after 14 consecutive stops.  That’s what makes them so close to carbon ceramic brakes in terms of thermal stability. Speaking of brakes, if you’re a Porsche enthusiast you might wonder why Taycans are forced to take Porsche Surface Coated Brakes when selecting the 21” Mission E Design Wheels. During the initial testing of Mission E Design wheels, Porsche originally used a smaller diameter cast-iron brake rotor. Unfortunately, at higher speeds, there was a pronounced resonance inside the cabin that could be heard.  As a result, Porsche paired the Mission E Design wheel with the larger diameter PSCBs rotor which eliminated the prior resonance.  And that is why Porsche forces PSCBs with that wheel - or you can select PCCBs with even larger rotors that continue to suppress the resonance of a smaller brake. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCBs). When you desire the ultimate braking performance, there is still no match for Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes. Here’s a great video from the show How It’s Made on how carbon ceramic rotors are produced. Porsche Has Developed Unparalleled Braking Technology, And Then There is Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control. This is another component that makes Porsche great. It’s a system for roll stabilization with active electromechanical stabilizers on the front and rear axles. This will not only reduce lateral tilt in turns, but will also increase driving dynamics, agility, and comfort.  It will also create more even tire wear as time plays out. This is a facet of the Cayenne, and it’s standard on Turbo S E-Hybrid and Turbo GT models. Being that the Cayenne sits taller than all other Porsche vehicles, this is the product that really benefits most from PDCC. A Pixar-Inspired Porsche 911 “Sally Special” recently sold at auction for $3.6M and all of it went to charity. And it’s the most expensive Porsche ever. The one-of-a-kind Pixar-inspired Porsche 911 has a number of special touches inspired by the character Sally from the Pixar movie Cars. The Porsche 911 Sally Special was sold at auction at RM Sotheby's during the recent Monterey Car Week event in Monterey, Calif. The Pixar-Inspired Porsche 911 recently sold at auction for $3.6M. The so-called “Sally Special” is a one-off 911 GTS inspired by the Sally Porsche Carrera character in the Pixar movie Cars. Porsche's Exclusive Manufaktur division worked closely with Pixar's creative team to create the one-of-a-kind sports car. During the packed auction event, the car was joined onstage by Sally's voice actress, Bonnie Hunt along with Pixar creative director Jay Ward and others linked to the cars Cars production and Kjell Gruner, president and CEO of Porsche North America. RM Sotheby's says the auction received much more attention and inquiries about the car than it was expecting - both in the days leading up to the sale and during the dramatic sale itself. The final bid came via telephone. The Pixar Porsche, or the "Sally Special" features unique design touches, starting with the paint and including the 996-style wheels. The "Sally Special" 911 is Pure Porsche DNA. There’s a special pinstripe under the spoiler and Pixar badges on the pillars. The Porsche Palm Springs restored 911 is up for top honors at the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. The event is being judged Saturday in Indianapolis. As part of the competition, dealerships nationwide were tasked with fully restoring a Porsche dating from the 1950s to 2000s. Each team documented its projects from start to finish. More than 60 dealerships are participating in the challenge, which is twice as many as participated last year. The Porsche Palm Springs entry – a 1982 911 SC that has been restored to its full glory - will be one of nine automobiles taking part in the event. The Palm Springs Porsche earned its entry at the Indianapolis show after winning a regional event held in Monterey recently. The restored 911 SC was originally from San Diego but ended up in Georgia before it was rescued by Porsche Palm Springs. Among other things, it had a worn out interior, damaged camshafts, steering issues, and a transmission that was full of water. During the 23-week restoration project, the Porsche Palm Springs team removed all mechanical components and sent the vehicle to a Porsche-approved collision center. The Porsche Palm Springs restored 911 got an upgraded interior, new pistons, bearings, and cylinder. And at the same time, they took apart and machined the transmission. The car’s oil had also converted to sludge and the axle had fallen apart. Restoration of the “Champagne Metallic” vintage Porsche is being carried out by Service/Classic Partner Manager Ken Arguelles and our Classic Technician, John Ghaemmaghami. As a Porsche Classic Partner, Porsche Palm Springs is participating in the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. We are competing against other regional Classic Partner dealerships in the restoration of a classic Porsche 911 SC from 1982 for the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. The “Champagne Metallic” vintage Porsche restoration is being carried out by Service/Classic Partner Manager Ken Arguelles and our Classic Technician, John Ghaemmaghami. A final reveal is expected later this summer. Among the big issues for this Porsche, restoration are a transmission that was full of water and the fact that the car’s oil had converted to sludge and the axle had fallen apart. All of those issues are being corrected as the car is lovingly restored to perfect working order. We spoke with Heritage Upholstery founder and owner Tony Hazell to learn more about the ultra-exclusive services he offers and the unusual way he connected with Porsche Palm Springs for the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. Tell us about the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge project and what sets it apart from others you have done? We have never done work with a dealership before. This is our 30th year of business. We work all over the world - trade and retail - but never with a dealership until now. Detailing Products for The Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. We provide ultra-accurate full interior kits and that’s what Porsche Palm Springs needed for this particular project – to match the original spec to the highest concours standards. Tell us about the work you do with your worldwide clientele? We manufacture our interiors using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) cutting machine to cut the car’s rear panel where, for example, there are punched speaker holes. There’s no way to do that accurately by hand. All of the materials we use are imported from Germany - not from Porsche – and reproduced to be closer to the original specification. With the Porsche Palm Springs car, there were quite a few parts that they needed for the interior that Porsche was not able to supply because they are hard to find. But we were able to source them from Germany. The model is a 1982 911 Carrera Coupe. We helped guide them with the interior color choices accurate to the era - and now it’s a cocoa brown. So basically Porsche Palm Spring’s team assembles the car down to the smallest pieces as part of a high-quality rebuild to factory standards. Even the transmission was completely stripped down. And because of our extensive experience with Porsche models from the early 1950s through to the mid-1990s, we have all the patents for upholstery/dimensions digitized and so we don’t need the car and we can offer this service essentially by mail order around the world. People actually send us the interior frames of their cars by air freight, and many times we build the interior ahead of the pieces arriving. In this particular case we could move forward, cut leather, and start manufacturing things knowing what the car is and how it will fit - and then Porsche Palm Springs brought us components from the car that are being rebuilt, including the frames. They needed replacement seat foams for front and rear and they did not have those – but we were able to source them from Germany. Preparing Products for The 911 Porsche Restoration. With that said, we don’t normally do this, but my top guy was made available to do a house call to the car at the dealership so they wouldn’t have to move the car around. We rarely have the cars themselves in shop. It’s a big shop: 7,000 square feet and we have a crew of 10 people right now as well as a sales office in Vancouver, BC. Tell us how you happened to end up in Coachella Valley doing this fascinating work. I’m from Wales originally but I’m a Canadian citizen. My wife and I moved down to the desert about six years ago. We were in Vancouver BC shipping out of Washington State into the United States. It was an easy move down here. It hasn’t really changed our business being here. In fact, we do more international business than we’ve ever done. The cars we work on end up on social media when they are finished and that creates a buzz throughout the world. We work with clients in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Dubai, Germany, and many other places. The customers cut and ship the upholstery to retail people who are going to have it done locally and also restoration shops because it’s so specialized. Details Matter. Quality Products for the 911 Porsche Restoration. What’s it like to work internationally? Worldwide, we only work on Porsche, Jaguar, and Mercedes. A lot of times to do our work we need the seating frames that survive well on the cars and those come to us via air freight. There is also specialized panels and substrates - dashboard and door components- that get re-covered. We work on seat upholstery and the other panels, often around the dashboard and doors, that are leather. We have 30 to 40 full car interior packages in production at any time but do very little local business. We work to ultra-high standards and we are the best in the world and we are priced accordingly. We only do it one way whether it’s for Porsche or anyone else. Details Matter. Quality Products for the 911 Porsche Restoration. Each member of the crew at Heritage have laptops on their benches and they access our how-to videos for every piece of every component of every car. That’s thousands of different parts and processes. There’s a specific video for sewers to sew the seat covers. There’s a video for the trimmers to take those seat covers and put them onto frames. How did this project come about? I stopped into Porsche Palm Springs one day and was looking at an old Porsche. I was telling someone that I make the upholstery for these cars. John, the head mechanic, happened to walk past and he introduced himself to me. He said he thought he had heard of us but wasn’t sure. I checked the security camera from work (on my phone) and showed him the facility and he went “OMG!” Suddenly, we were having a conversation and someone was saying ‘We need a door panel like this and we don’t have any of them.’ And I said, ‘Yeah I think we have about 50 of these on the shelf.’ When his colleague later came in to see the facility he told our people they had a classics project coming up, the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. Thirty years ago I had a very good job in a telephone company. I was a well-paid industrial electrician. As a hobby, I went back overseas and met people in the classic car upholstery business and started working on Jaguars and then got into Porsches and Mercedes – and strictly no other cars. I was restoring a Jaguar car of my own. I personally have never done this work hands-on. But I know every aspect and understand every aspect of our production. I know everything down to the correct tension of the thread for the sewing machine. My wife and I own the business together. And I have been doing it since before the CAD technology came along. Our crew used to hand cut like they did in the factories and then they tool cut, using sharp blades that are like large cookie cutter blades that are hit with a hydraulic press machine that cuts through boards. Now everything is cut with our machines. The 911 Porsche Being Restored in the Porsche Challenge. Now, for instance, the operator rolls out the original spec carpet onto the bed of the Gerber machine presses a button for any Porsche carpet and it’s set to cut to precisely the original pattern in about one minute and 30 seconds – and it never fails to make me smile.
