As a Porsche Classic Partner, Porsche Palm Springs is participating in the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. We are competing against other regional Classic Partner dealerships in the restoration of a classic Porsche 911 SC from 1982 for the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. The “Champagne Metallic” vintage Porsche restoration is being carried out by Service/Classic Partner Manager Ken Arguelles and our Classic Technician, John Ghaemmaghami. A final reveal is expected later this summer. Among the big issues for this Porsche, restoration are a transmission that was full of water and the fact that the car’s oil had converted to sludge and the axle had fallen apart. All of those issues are being corrected as the car is lovingly restored to perfect working order. Among the most visible, showstopping changes to the vehicle is the all-new leather upholstery throughout the renovated interior. For help with that, Porsche Palm Springs turned to world-class upholstery manufacturer Heritage Upholstery. Tell us about the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge project and what sets it apart from others you have done? We have never done work with a dealership before. This is our 30th year of business. We work all over the world - trade and retail - but never with a dealership until now. Detailing Products for The Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. We provide ultra-accurate full interior kits and that’s what Porsche Palm Springs needed for this particular project – to match the original spec to the highest concours standards. Tell us about the work you do with your worldwide clientele? We manufacture our interiors using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) cutting machine to cut the car’s rear panel where, for example, there are punched speaker holes. There’s no way to do that accurately by hand. All of the materials we use are imported from Germany - not from Porsche – and reproduced to be closer to the original specification. With the Porsche Palm Springs car, there were quite a few parts that they needed for the interior that Porsche was not able to supply because they are hard to find. But we were able to source them from Germany. The model is a 1982 911 Carrera Coupe. We helped guide them with the interior color choices accurate to the era - and now it’s a cocoa brown. So basically Porsche Palm Spring’s team assembles the car down to the smallest pieces as part of a high-quality rebuild to factory standards. Even the transmission was completely stripped down. And because of our extensive experience with Porsche models from the early 1950s through to the mid-1990s, we have all the patents for upholstery/dimensions digitized and so we don’t need the car and we can offer this service essentially by mail order around the world. People actually send us the interior frames of their cars by air freight, and many times we build the interior ahead of the pieces arriving. In this particular case we could move forward, cut leather, and start manufacturing things knowing what the car is and how it will fit - and then Porsche Palm Springs brought us components from the car that are being rebuilt, including the frames. They needed replacement seat foams for front and rear and they did not have those – but we were able to source them from Germany. Preparing Products for The 911 Porsche Restoration. With that said, we don’t normally do this, but my top guy was made available to do a house call to the car at the dealership so they wouldn’t have to move the car around. We rarely have the cars themselves in shop. It’s a big shop: 7,000 square feet and we have a crew of 10 people right now as well as a sales office in Vancouver, BC. Tell us how you happened to end up in Coachella Valley doing this fascinating work. I’m from Wales originally but I’m a Canadian citizen. My wife and I moved down to the desert about six years ago. We were in Vancouver BC shipping out of Washington State into the United States. It was an easy move down here. It hasn’t really changed our business being here. In fact, we do more international business than we’ve ever done. The cars we work on end up on social media when they are finished and that creates a buzz throughout the world. We work with clients in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Dubai, Germany, and many other places. The customers cut and ship the upholstery to retail people who are going to have it done locally and also restoration shops because it’s so specialized. Details Matter. Quality Products for the 911 Porsche Restoration. What’s it like to work internationally? Worldwide, we only work on Porsche, Jaguar, and Mercedes. A lot of times to do our work we need the seating frames that survive well on the cars and those come to us via air freight. There is also specialized panels and substrates - dashboard and door components- that get re-covered. We work on seat upholstery and the other panels, often around the dashboard and doors, that are leather. We have 30 to 40 full car interior packages in production at any time but do very little local business. We work to ultra-high standards and we are the best in the world and we are priced accordingly. We only do it one way whether it’s for Porsche or anyone else. Details Matter. Quality Products for the 911 Porsche Restoration. Each member of the crew at Heritage have laptops on their benches and they access our how-to videos for every piece of every component of every car. That’s thousands of different parts and processes. There’s a specific video for sewers to sew the seat covers. There’s a video for the trimmers to take those seat covers and put them onto frames. How did this project come about? I stopped into Porsche Palm Springs one day and was looking at an old Porsche. I was telling someone that I make the upholstery for these cars. John, the head mechanic, happened to walk past and he introduced himself to me. He said he thought he had heard of us but wasn’t sure. I checked the security camera from work (on my phone) and showed him the facility and he went “OMG!” Suddenly, we were having a conversation and someone was saying ‘We need a door panel like this and we don’t have any of them.’ And I said, ‘Yeah I think we have about 50 of these on the shelf.’ When his colleague later came in to see the facility he told our people they had a classics project coming up, the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. Thirty years ago I had a very good job in a telephone company. I was a well-paid industrial electrician. As a hobby, I went back overseas and met people in the classic car upholstery business and started working on Jaguars and then got into Porsches and Mercedes – and strictly no other cars. I was restoring a Jaguar car of my own. I personally have never done this work hands-on. But I know every aspect and understand every aspect of our production. I know everything down to the correct tension of the thread for the sewing machine. My wife and I own the business together. And I have been doing it since before the CAD technology came along. Our crew used to hand cut like they did in the factories and then they tool cut, using sharp blades that are like large cookie cutter blades that are hit with a hydraulic press machine that cuts through boards. Now everything is cut with our machines. The 911 Porsche Being Restored in the Porsche Challenge. Now, for instance, the operator rolls out the original spec carpet onto the bed of the Gerber machine presses a button for any Porsche carpet and it’s set to cut to precisely the original pattern in about one minute and 30 seconds – and it never fails to make me smile. The wait is almost over for a new naturally-aspirated icon: the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992). Tik Tok gave us a glimpse of the blacked-out development Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992) approaching a stoplight in Southern California. Among the standout features: the huge wing on the back. Road & Track noted that it’s even larger than the one on Porsche’s GTE PRO racers.  It retains the graceful swan-neck uprights of the GT3, “though it does appear to feature even more adjustability than before,” the magazine noted. From the look of it the 992 GT3 RS will feature the same 4.0-liter flat-six engine as the GT3 but with an expected increase in output. It should also be a few pounds lighter than the existing 911 GT3. But reduction won’t be huge: About the weight of an average house cat, one magazine reported. According to media reports it’s expected to come exclusively with the 7-speed PDK gearbox. “That powertrain combined with an even more aggressive aero package should make for one seriously capable track car. How fast does the Porsche Taycan charge? When it comes to fast charging, the Porsche Taycan is setting records. How fast does the Porsche Taycan charge? The Taycan can go from 5 to 80 percent of full charge in just 22 minutes on the fastest charge points. That means you won’t be enduring much of a wait - just enough time to visit the restroom or make a quick business call. In fact, did you know that the Taycan is a current “charging champion,” according to an article by Christies Real Estate comparing the charging times of various luxury cars? That means you can add more than 15 miles of range for every minute your Taycan is plugged into the charger. That super-quick charging capability makes the new Taycan Cross Turismo electric station wagon a favorite for families and weekend road trippers. How Fast does the Porsche Taycan charge? Starting at around $100,000 the Taycan Cross Turismo is powered by two electric motors with total outputs ranging between 469 and 750 horsepower, depending on the trim level you decide on. It’s nice to only have to stop for 20 minutes when you are used to charging for, say, 45 minutes. And if you are trying to make it to a specific destination by a certain time it can make all the difference. Because it’s so fast to charge, the cost of recharging a Taycan can be relatively inexpensive. According to InsideEVs, charging to 80 percent will set you back by only $4.80. (Keep in mind that DC fast-charging stations aren’t available everywhere just yet). The new version of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS appears to be even more extreme. As the 992 GT3 RS nears completion we've spied some photos that show a rather extreme wing. The new wing appears to use similar swan-neck mounts as the new GT3. However, the wing on the GT3 RS sits even higher off the bodywork – and has two sections. And the GT3 RS's wing is active, something we know thanks to previous photos of the vehicle’s testing on the Nürburgring. Those photos showed that the wing adjusts its angle under braking. Other extreme features on the Porsche GT3 RS revealed by the unofficial photos so far: Air exits on the hood and big vents on the front fenders. Cutaways on the front bumper and a similarly dramatic rear bumper with large air channels and a diffuser. Vertical fins on either side of the roof are located ahead of the rear glass. There are intakes on the rear fenders feeding the engine. According to Road and Track, there likely won’t be any big power increase over the 520 hp of the last GT3 RS. All of the additional speed will come from additional downforce from the new aero kit as well as the mechanical grip generated largely by the double-wishbone front suspension introduced on the new GT3, the publication noted. “The car should be quite light, too, thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber and other composite materials. Like all Porsche RS models since the 991 GT3 RS, this one will be PDK only. Porsche's reasoning is that an RS car is built for getting the fastest lap time, and that can only be achieved with a dual-clutch transmission,” according to Road & Track. This new 911 will use the existing GT3’s naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine and that it will likely have a small performance uptick to the earlier car’s 503 horsepower. The drive will go to the rear axle. We should get our first glimpse of the real thing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June. So far it’s been spotted at Germany’s Nürburgring in black. So far, the most striking features are those vertical wings on the rear bumper behind the rear wheels and on either side of the front wheels. This latest variant of the 911 is expected to be naturally aspirated with a seven-speed PDK paddle-shift transmission. There are even some rumors that it could end up with an increased capacity of 4.2 liters, though others in the media have cast doubt on that speculation. We’ll just have to wait and find out! And the 2022 911 GT3 – the street-legal version of the GT3 RS - is a perfect example of this tradition. The Porsche Crest is a well-known automotive icon. Not to be confused with the Porsche logo, the crest depicts a distinctive horse with a sweeping tail. The Porsche Crest symbolizes the roots of the Porsche company and simultaneously illustrates the quality and dynamics of its products - with the prancing horse taken from the seal of the city of Stuttgart depicted within the contours of a golden shield. The surrounding red and black state colors and the stylized antlers are taken from the traditional crest of Württemberg-Hohenzollern. more Finally, the Porsche logo forms a protective arch over the entire design. While the Porsche logo had already been used on the brand’s first vehicle in 1948, the Porsche Crest was not created until 1952. Why You Can’t Go Wrong with the Porsche Cayenne The Porsche crest itself has an unusual history. Let’s take a look! The crest was first suggested as a quality seal for the 356 at a meeting between company founder Ferry Porsche and US importer Max Hoffman back in 1952. The same year, advertising manager Herrmann Lapper and designer Xaver Reimspieß produced a preliminary design for the crest. And it's the same one that is still used to this day with just a few minor differences in detail. Reimspieß sketched a crest that symbolized the roots of the company as well as the dynamism and quality of its products. Interestingly, is also said to have designed the Volkswagen logo way back in 1936. The crest based on original drawings and created using special tools. As with the original, it is gold-plated and the color and enamel are painstakingly applied by hand. The crest is durable. The traditional Porsche Crest has had to undergo extensive quality testing that includes climate testing at the Porsche Research and Development Centre in Weissach as well as a stone impact simulation carried out at a ballistic firing range. This symbol, steeped in history, signals a continued long life for classic Porsche models. The story of the Porsche logo is equally interesting. In March 1951, Porsche launched a competition among German art academies, offering the DM 1,000 for the creation of a Porsche company logo. Unfortunately not a single design offered in the competition passed muster. But late in late 1951, Ferry Porsche visited New York City and was asked for a logo by the American importer Max Hoffman. Work on a logo was ramped up within the company and by early the next year, Reimspieß, a highly talented designer who had already designed the Volkswagen logo in 1936, created the fantasy crest. The Porsche Crest was registered with the German Patent Office and then first seen on the horn button at the end of 1952, before being incorporated into the characteristic bonnet handle of the Porsche 356 Speedster in November 1954. By 1959, it also appeared on the hubcaps of the Zuffenhausen sports cars and, since then, every Porsche vehicle has featured this seal of quality on its bonnet. The copyright-protected Porsche Crest has become one of the most famous trademarks in the world and may only be used commercially with the express permission of Porsche AG. The original Porsche Crest is even available from Porsche Classic for a wide range of historic models. Over the years, the Porsche Crest has undergone careful design changes. The crests available through Porsche Classic are differentiated as follows: • From 1954 for the Porsche 356 and from 1964 for the 911 also in another size. We decided to do something a little different to celebrate the recent launch of the new Porsche Macan. In lieu of throwing just another reception or party here at Porsche Palm Springs, our Porsche Pro & Brand Ambassador Sherman Chan hosted a very special launch event that coincided with International Women’s History Month. After all, the Macan is the No. 1 selling Porsche model in the world, and as such it stands out where others fade into the masses as young, dynamic, and modern - just like the growing number of women who are becoming Porsche owners in recent years. Here is Sherman, in her own words, describing this outstanding launch. more Tell us about this launch for the new Macan. For the new Macan launch at Porsche Palm Springs, we decided to celebrate International Women’s Month, which happens in March, and combine the two into a women-focused launch event with an incredible speaker, sit-down dinner and Macan unveil. It was a way for us to recognize, thank and celebrate the women who drive our community. Can you tell us more about the speaker and attendees? Our keynote speaker was Aurora Straus, a Harvard senior and professional race car driver. We invited local businesswomen, female Porsche owners and enthusiasts, and women who work at Porsche Palm Springs. Why was this event important within the context of Porsche and women in general? Porsche has a long-standing history of listening to women, recognizing the incredible influence we have in luxury cars and decision-making and our ever-growing spending power. The Macan was designed as a marriage of practicality and performance. The design elements echo the sporty 911 and the adventurous Cayenne. Naturally, our savvy guests were drawn to it. Among other things, Aurora shared the story of her upbringing, triumphs in racing, and obstacles along the way. She is a true inspiration and left everyone motivated that evening. We also had great reception and feedback from our attendees about how much they loved the new Macan and having such a great opportunity to connect with like-minded women in the Coachella Valley. Cars with a lower overall carbon footprint than electric cars? That is the future Porsche is envisioning as it joins forces with Siemens Energy and other international companies to build an industrial plant for the production of an almost carbon-neutral fuel (eFuel). The ground-breaking ceremony for this pioneering project in Punta Arenas, Chile, took place last month – with Chile’s Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet present. The pilot plant is called Haru Oni (aka Highly Innovative Fuels plant). The plant will produce fuel that is nearly carbon-neutral and can be used with existing internal-combustion engines, according to Porsche. The fuel will be produced using electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. more Carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from the atmosphere will then be combined with the hydrogen to produce synthetic methanol, which will be converted into fuel or "eFuel" as Porsche has named it. Making this project even more green, electricity needed for production will come from wind power, lowering the carbon footprint of the production process, the company said in a statement. All of this makes for one of the cleanest fuel sources on the planet, according to Porsche. In fact, the process will be so clean that cars burning synthetic fuel will have a lower overall carbon footprint than electric cars once emissions related to manufacturing are factored in, according to Porsche vice president of GT cars and manufacturing Dr. Frank Walliser. However, Porsche noted that the amount of energy involved makes the process of manufacturing and distributing synthetic fuel is still less efficient than charging an electric car. The is slated to produce around 34,340 gallons of fuel during the first stage slated for 2022. A second stage, through 2024 is expected to ramp up production to 14.5 million gallons annually. And a third stage that will take the project through 2026 will further boost annual production capacity to 145.3 million gallons. Porsche plans to use synthetic fuel in its Mobil1 Supercup one-make race series beginning in 2022. The overall hope – along with the pressing environmental need for such technologies – is that synthetic fuel can help keep Porsche’s classic cars on the road in the era of electric cars and beyond. For instance, the new fuel may be a good fit for the 911, which Porsche has hesitated to electrify. But cost may prove to be an issue, along with the fact that the production process is not yet proven. The Porsche team of researchers are working to get the price below $2 per liter or $7.6 per gallon - but that would still make synthetic fuel more expensive than gasoline, even in Europe.Still, Porsche is hopeful about the future of this fuel. “I’m pleased that we’re making progress on this international beacon project for the hydrogen economy together with strong international partners from business and politics,” says Armin Schnettler, EVP for New Energy Business at Siemens Energy. “With Haru Oni, we’re bringing our power-to-X technology to the global market. We’re jointly developing and realizing the world’s first integrated and commercial large-scale plant for producing synthetic, carbon-neutral fuels. In southern Chile, we’re implementing one of the energy industry’s most exciting projects for the future and driving forward the decarbonization of the mobility sector. It means we’re making an important and rapidly effective contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the traffic and transport sector.” The Haru Oni project benefits from the perfect climatic conditions for wind energy in Magallanes province in southern Chile to produce the virtually carbon-neutral fuel using low-cost green wind power, Porsche noted. Porsche AG has set itself an ambitious goal: in 2030, the company wants to have a CO2-neutral balance sheet across the entire value chain. The Executive Board of Porsche AG provided information on this at the annual press conference. “Sustainability is an important part of our Strategy 2030 – holistically: on economic, ecological, and social terms,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “We launched a comprehensive decarbonization program with a firm target in mind: Porsche wants to have a CO2-neutral balance sheet throughout the entire value chain in 2030. We will achieve this by systematically avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions.”
